November 14th is designated as American Teddy Bear Day. According to the U.S. Navy, who provided the content, we have President Theodore Roosevelt to thank for the Teddy Bear.
In November of 1902, President Roosevelt and friends were hunting, and came across an injured bear. A hunting guide asked Roosevelt to kill the bear so he could get a trophy. The President would not do it. Word quickly spread of Roosevelt’s kindness and a famous cartoonist named Clifford Berryman drew a cartoon based on Roosevelt’s rescue of the bear. Upon seeing the cartoon, a storeowner in Brooklyn decided to sell toy bears in his shop as a way to remember the bear President Roosevelt saved. He even asked the President to use his name for the toy bears. Teddy Bears, are popular even today, who knew they were named after Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt.
